we changed GCC 4.1 a couple of times since this PR was filed (it's currently
4.1.3 20080704 prerelease (NetBSD nb2 20081120) in -current.)  we've also
since upgraded to GCC 4.5.3.

is this still a problem?  can you test -current or this?  thanks.
