That wasn't what you said originally; anyway, in this case usb is
likely a red herring.
I suspect the real problem may have been that the bootloader failed to
load the installer miniroot module, but you didn't see the messages
(if any) booting scrolls the screen too fast to see anything.
As for the controller, I have no idea. Asking on current-users or
tech-kern is more likely to attract the attention of someone who knows
more about such things...
