 Slightly on a tangent: do you use dhcp to configure your network?
 
 I think a reasonable change would be to drop the ping test if we get
 the network autoconfigured, but still do it on manual setup (as a
 double check for the entered data). If the ping does not work, the user
 can thing twice and choose to ignore the ping failure - or fix the
 configuration data.
