I was looking for details for setting up RARPD on a Debian system and Google
found the reference in the NetBSD that mentioned Linux. I followed the
directions (IP then MAC) and watched as the device could not get an IP
address and the syslog said that RARPD could not find an IP to match the MAC
(with the same MAC that I had entered). I swapped them (fuzzy memory from
the last time I tried it) and it worked instantly. They may have different
order in different versions. In any case this was on a Debian based system
(Voyage Linux). I don't have a BDS system to try it on. Here is a reference
 for what its worth:

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious - but could you please give a bit
of background? What rarpd are you using on what system, where did you get
  it?

The NetBSD ethers(5) man page certainly describes the format for NetBSD
correctly, so I'm not sure what needs fixing and where.
