That's the important bit. Unfortunately, as far as I know the MCP55
controllers really are viaide (some or all MCP65 and MCP75 are really
ahcisata) so what I suggested isn't going to help.

Nope, it won't be substantially different.
If you feel brave you might try current (to see if it works, not so
much for the dmesg) but probably it won't be any different.
