The original problem was fixed ages ago; the later issue isn't entirely
clear but owing to changing circumstances on the net is no longer possible
to set up again.

Somewhere we ought to have a separate database of symptoms people ought to
be looking for, and instructions for extracting and reporting useful info,
so if anyone ever sees the hanging ftp sessions again we can get it fixed;
but setting that up so it's useful isn't exactly easy.
