 You could have tried the netbsd-5 branch which I would recommend in your

 Correct -current, if you use i386, needs a newer boot loader to load the 
modules.
 
 As I said above it would be better to use the netbsd-5 branch from
 http://nyftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD-daily/netbsd-5/201002220000Z/
