 I had considered the same feature and actually wrote a similar patch myself,
 but I did not enable it because of one issue. The bootloader needs to be
 able to determine if the kernel it is booting includes the MODULAR option or
 not, otherwise you end up introducing a 5 second delay for every boot of a
 MONOLITHIC kernel when /stand/i386/<kver> isn't populated.
