 Well I leave the null modem serial cable connected 24/7 but I only have
 Putty running and connected via serial, when I'm actually using it. Most of
 the time though, to access the machine, I use OpenSSH from downstairs.  Will

  Was the system on the other end of the serial cable powered down
  or put to sleep ? This will likely generate a break ...
