On current-users, it was mentioned that, for those running i386/amd64 with a 
GENERIC kernel, boot must copied from /usr/mdec to / after a build with the 
latest sources, so that the boot loader can pick up a kernel module to handle 
the root file system.

UPDATING only refers the need to "install the latest bootloader", without 
specifying the way to do it.
