Are you sure the machine was really turned off?
Reason #1:
You may have hit a kernel panic before the actual ACPI call
was effective.
Reason #2:
Sometimes when I shutdown my T60, the screen gets black and it looks
like it is off, but it is actually still running: the power LED stays
on.
After a good night of sleep, in both cases the battery will be empty,
and the machine look like it was turned off correctly. Can you confirm
that the machine really was turned off? Can you reproduce the problem
every time?
