 I don't know if this is a useful data point, but:
 
 I tested w/ audioplay(1) on a SoundBlaster Pro (8-bit), when
 supplied with compatible audio data, it works
 fine on NetBSD/i386 4.0.
 
 I did initially experience something similar to the original
 report (fraction of a second good, then junk noise).  But
 I found that the jumper on the card had the thing configured
 for the wrong IRQ. Adjusting that jumper to match the driver's
 config(5)uration solved that.
 
 I wanted to try xanim, but it didn't like the codecs
 in the troops.mov file I found.
