 I had needed the patch in 
http://mail-index.netbsd.org/port-alpha/2000/10/23/0003.html 
   for many years, but I'm running a -current kernel from July 2007  
 (4.99.22), and the patch isn't required. I'm not sure when it started  
 working without the patch, but I think it it was sometime after 4.99 - 
 current. In any case, I think this PR can be closed now.
