 Manuel, Pavel,

Thanks for your replies. I had to resort to booting via floppy with
serial console, but things are now clear.

The GENERIC.NOACPI kernel does indeed boot on this server.
The normal GENERIC kernel does not, yielding the SCSI card
state dump we discussed earlier. Also, disabling ACPI at the
UC> prompt during boot works as well. If there was a way to
make this setting persistent across boots, it would be very
convenient. I have seen some proposals of how this might be
done in NetBSD in the future, but for now it's not an option for
my server environment -- the machines need to reboot without
 human intervension.

Given that ACPI is now the default, but was not the default for
3.1 as Manuel points out, you might be seeing an increase in
 observations of this type.

Finally, although GENERIC.NOACPI is working for me, what I
 really need is something like

     GENERIC.MP.NOACPI

because my server is a dual-processor machine. Do you think
that such a kernel might be included in future distributions? Is
there a site I can download such a kernel from, even if it is
 experimental or unofficial?

 Thanks and regards, Rich

In 3.1, ACPI was not enabled by defaut, you had to build a custom
  kernel to
  use it.
