 Thanks; that did it.  I can now get into X.  There's an oddball issue:
 only the touchpad is working, not the trackpoint, even though both are
 enabled in the BIOS and both work under Ubuntu.  I'm going to try
 disabling the touchpad in the BIOS since I rarely use it anyway.
