System: NetBSD merean.lan 4.0_RC1 NetBSD 4.0_RC1 (GENERIC.NOACPI) #0: Sat Sep 1 15:59:45 PDT 2007 builds@wb42:/home/builds/ab/netbsd-4-0-RC1/i386/200709011431Z-obj/home/builds/ab/netbsd-4-0-RC1/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/GENERIC.NOACPI i386
Architecture: i386
Machine: i386
>Description:

NetBSD 4.0_RC1's kernel locks up completely when bringing up
fxp0 when acpi is enabled. On a kernel with acpi disabled, bringing up
the network works, and the NIC works fine (at least it can transfer a
couple of gigabytes over NFS near wire speed).

Dell Latitude D505, i855m chipset, Intel PRO/100 VE (MOB) NIC, dothan CPU.
It's a bog standard, 3 year old centrino laptop which has never exhibted
problems under any linux kernel or on freebsd (only 6 series tested). I
have never seen acpi related problems, nor did I ever had a problem getting
the NIC to work in other operating systems.

>How-To-Repeat:

Use any kernel with acpi enabled (GENERIC, GENERIC_LAPTOP). Boot and then
try 'ifconfig fxp0 192.168.1.100 up'. The kernel hangs hard, no response
to keyboard input.

However, the INSTALL and GENERIC.NOACPI kernels work fine.
(Ironically, the system was installed over a pxe netboot
 and network install.)

>Fix:

Use NOACPI kernel. Default install with a GENERIC kernel will not work.

Two dmesg's are attached, one with and one without acpi (I know that the
acpi version is a custom kernel, but the results are the same with the
standard kernels).

Note how the IRQ assignment to fxp0 differs.
