I've localized the problem to the .Xdefaults entry:

xterm*colorRVMode: true

               Specifies whether characters with the
               reverse attribute should be displayed
               in color.

when set to false, the default. I get no OOPS for color sequences
in screen.  I don't have a solution for color reverse mode.
