 The onboard device seemingly supports only USB 1.0. It works with
 the external drive but the transfer rate is very low (about 1 MB/s).
 I cannot even reproduce the boot issues any longer. As mentioned
 the machine wouldn't even reach the boot prompt if the external
 drive was powered on at boot time. Even after removing the USB 2.0
 card and using the onboard USB, the system boots fine.
