2 days of doing nothing but banging my head on the desk...

The bug in /bin/sh didn't actually help things either!
(Make must be leaving a lot of files open, causing the
shell to get fd >= 10 for one of its pipes...)

You might find that you can remove the '-j 1' from (IIRC)
Makefile.crunch, I did a lot of test builds without it but
wasn't quite confident enough to remove it.
