Did you mean to say that star is the standard tar on Gentoo?

This is not the Gentoo problem report database -- this is NetBSD
http://www.netbsd.org/Misc/send-pr.html

The stardard tar is now a pax derivative. This pax has a BSD license.

star is GPL'd. star is already available in the pkgsrc collection in the
archivers category. (star does look interesting: I plan on giving it a
try. Thanks for the pointer.)
