NetBSD lahksa 1.6 NetBSD 1.6 (LAHKSA) #2: Mon Sep 23 00:40:13 CEST 2002 krille@lahksa:/usr/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/LAHKSA i386

>Description:
When running X the text consoles (console and ttyE1 to ttyE3) become
unusable. Run X (startx) and then restart it (using the menu, may need two
attempts). (Resizing the xclock with the top right gadget has the same effect)
After that some text appears at the bottom of the text console. This seems
to be read from somewhere in the memory. I've seen there some dmesg output
in green letters, so it's probably from the messages that appear while
booting. The lines are in the normal order, but roughly every second line
is not displayed.
In other cases there's some text which appears to be output from /etc/security
(diffs on system files). Only one of both appeared at the same time.
Also, if you switch between the text consoles sometimes only the upper half of
the screen changes. If you run commands that make output on the console or
simply press return some more lines of the text scroll into view (one for
each line of output that should normally appear). When continuing to press
return colorful rectangles (partially with blinking charaters) appear.
Sometimes the output of programs or what you type is visible as text.

During all that X itself seems to be fine, but I wonder how stable the
system is in this state. No crashes until now.

The system is a fresh install from the 1.6 release binaries. The
Windowmanager is also still the default twm. Graphics card is an ATI Radeon
7200.

I have heard from Jonathan Perkin (<sketch@rd.bbc.co.uk>) that he has a
simmilar problem using xdm and a ATI Rage 128 Pro TF.

On my system I have already disabled the agp driver as suggested in PR 17810,
but it did not help. I have also disabled MTRR, but the MTRR warnings of
XFree did not stop. I suspect the problem has something to do with them.
