System: NetBSD splitter-pine.urc.uninett.no 1.5ZC NetBSD 1.5ZC (GENERIC.MPDEBUG) #5: Sun May 19 17:26:48 CEST 2002 jarle@splitter-pine.urc.uninett.no:/usr/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/GENERIC.MPDEBUG i386
Architecture: i386
Machine: i386
>Description:

First, my apologies for the vagueness of this bug report. Feel free to ask
for more information.

My current SMP kernel from the sommerfeld_i386mp_1 branch (sys/arch/i386 +
sys/dev/pci from May 19th, other sources from Sat May 18 12:48:18 EDT 2002)
has problems with time keeping. I first noticed this when the tset command
run as part of the login process started got stuck. Running ktrace on tset
revealed that it got stuck in a call to nanosleep. Indeed, even a 'sleep
1' command at the shell prompt never returns. ktrace below.

 10319 ktrace EMUL "netbsd"
 10319 ktrace CALL execve(0xbfbfd25c,0xbfbfd730,0xbfbfd73c)
 10319 ktrace NAMI "/sbin/sleep"
10319 ktrace RET execve -1 errno 2 No such file or directory
 10319 ktrace CALL execve(0xbfbfd25c,0xbfbfd730,0xbfbfd73c)
 10319 ktrace NAMI "/usr/sbin/sleep"
10319 ktrace RET execve -1 errno 2 No such file or directory
 10319 ktrace CALL execve(0xbfbfd25c,0xbfbfd730,0xbfbfd73c)
 10319 ktrace NAMI "/bin/sleep"
 10319 sleep EMUL "netbsd"
 10319 sleep RET execve JUSTRETURN
 10319 sleep CALL issetugid
 10319 sleep RET issetugid 0
 10319 sleep CALL __sigaction14(0xe,0xbfbfd660,0xbfbfd648)
 10319 sleep RET __sigaction14 0
 10319 sleep CALL nanosleep(0xbfbfd6b8,0)
 10319 sleep PSIG SIGINT SIG_DFL

This problem also seems to cause network connections in the TIME_WAIT state
to linger on forever. A (now) idle system has had more than 500 of these
hanging around for more than an hour.
[ ... ]
tcp 0 0 localhost.8000 localhost.49173 TIME_WAIT
tcp 0 0 localhost.8000 localhost.49172 TIME_WAIT
tcp 0 0 localhost.8000 localhost.49171 TIME_WAIT
tcp 0 0 localhost.8000 localhost.49170 TIME_WAIT

The system has problems keeping time via ntpd as well. The message log is
littered with messages of the type:
