The KERNFS file system is not defined in the port-alpha GENERIC kernel so the
error message
mount_kernfs: kernfs on /kern: Operation not supported by device
appears during the boot sequence, just after the
Mounting all filesystems...
message.

boot an alpha with the GENERIC kernel.

Remove the # character at the beginning of line 49 of
/sys/arch/alpha/conf/GENERIC
