When trying to either edit a file or build a package on a system
where /var is an LFS v2 partition, I consistently get a
"Inappropriate file type or format" error.

make any package -- it chokes when attempting to write
/var/db/pkg/pkgdb.byfile.db
edit any file -- it chokes when writing a tmp file to
/var/tmp/vi.recover
