The kterm entry of
/usr/share/misc/termcap can't display colors while xterm can.
This is because the kterm entry is a child of xterm-r6, not that of xterm-xf86-v33. (The xterm entry is a child of xterm-xf86-v33.)

Use XEmacs or Emacs 21 with the -nw option on kterm (v6.2.0).
The initial message is monochrome.
