You're right -- I have no determined, too, that it's not the 1.4.2 ftpd.
Instead, it seems to be something more generic.  Witness this telnet session
(this is from the login prompt):

montecarlo 129 % pwd
/u/tomhtomh
montecarlo 130 % cd
montecarlo 131 % pwd
/u/tomh
montecarlo 132 % cd /usr/pkgsrc/lang/perl5
montecarlo 133 % pwd
/usr/pkgsrc/lang/perl5
montecarlo 134 % ksh
montecarlo 129 % pwd
/usr/pkgsrcpkgsrc/langlang/perl5perl5
montecarlo 130 % 

The same behaviour occurs even if I change to csh, and run with no .login
file.

Could this be caused by a bad shared library?  Something else?  The kernel
is unchanged, but clearly something has gone awry on the system.

I will be happy to provide telnet access to anyone who is willing to dig
into this problem.
