	System: NetBSD serafina-pekkala.dme.org 1.5_ALPHA2 NetBSD 1.5_ALPHA2 (S-P) #3: Wed Sep 20 22:16:37 BST 2000 dme@serafina-pekkala.dme.org:/home/dme/netbsd/1.5_ALPHA2/sys/arch/i386/compile/S-P i386
Hardware is a Toshiba Dynabook SS 3380V (very similar to the
	Portege 3000 series).
	Network adaptors:
		WaveLAN/IEEE pcmcia (wi0)
		SMC 2102 USB ethernet (kue0)
	CDROM:
		Toshiba PCMCIA IDE CDROM

>Description:
The installation instructions for NetBSD 1.4.2 through 1.5_ALPHA2
include details on how to perform an installation using a
PCMCIA device. In essence, the instructions indicate that a
GENERIC kernel should be copied to the hard disk in the midst
of the install and then used for the remainder of the process.

Unfortunately at the point where the instructions indicate to
copy the GENERIC kernel and restart, the hard disk doesn't have
sufficient contents to support a continuing installation. It is
missing /sbin/init and all of the device nodes (in fact there
appears to be nothing more than an empty directory tree).

This problem would also occur if a USB device were intended
as the source of installation sets.
>How-To-Repeat:
Attempt to install 1.4.2 through 1.5_ALPHA2 using a PCMCIA
device (testing with PCMCIA network card and PCMCIA cdrom).
>Fix:
I copied the installation sets to a DOS partition from Linux,
and hence could complete the installation.

Two other obvious possibilities spring to mind:
	1) ensure that sufficient contents are copied from the
installation memory disk to the hard disk to allow the
	   documented procedure to function,
	2) take advantage of the move to 2 floppies to include more
	   drivers in the install kernel.
