ktrace/ktruss doesn't reveal anything. :(

sending SIGQUIT causes:

checking whether signals are blocked when signal handlers are entered... yes
checking whether other signals are blocked when signal handlers are entered... 

(note the "yes")

again, sending SIGQUIT advances things along with a yes, hanging at

checking for sigaction... yes
checking whether sigaction handlers need to be reinstalled... no
checking whether signals are blocked when sigaction handlers are entered... 

which responds to SIGQUIT and the build proceeds to the end, and
seems to run ok so far.
