Thanks, although actually I don't understand X either.  Luck was with
me and the first thing I tried fixed the problem.

I don't understand how this code could ever have been tested.  For all
I know there are 2 styles of 24-bit frame-buffer and the xfree86 SVGA
drivers created a second, incompatible standard.

I submitted it here figuring that xearth was orphaned.  I guess I
could submit it to xfree also and see if they can forward it to the
author, wherever he may be.
