There is, in the abuse directory under like port/x11 a file called video24. 
That file looks like it is fully capable of doing a 24bit depth.  However.. It
was *not* immediately obvious how to integrate it.  It's just a routine all by
itself called like video_24_page() and nothing seems to call it, or is ifdeffed
not to..  

I encourage people to take this package (and any others like it) as a base, and
integrate features that I or other authors can't get working.  I'm usually good
with them.. but I know my limits, and when it's time to punt.  (theres also a
point where I could do it, but the level of frustration is too high to bother
with.. ;)
