System: NetBSD laplace 1.3.1 NetBSD 1.3.1 (LAPLACE) #3: Thu May 7 15:42:23 CEST 1998 ignatios@sinus:/usr/obj/kernel/LAPLACE i386

Hardware: old 486 (Toshiba?) laptop.

>Description:
On the first access after autoconfiguration (normally the ttyflags
call in rc), the machine hangs, with the IC-BUSY LED is lighted.

The same machine, same kernel, works fine with a NOKIA GSM interface card.
The same modem card worked fine with a NetBSD-1.2 + JTK-PCMCIA installation.
The same modem card still works fine with W95 on a modern AcerLight notebook.

This is dmesg, if booting machine with a 3c589D inserted.

>How-To-Repeat:
boot machine.
or, remove tty02 from /etc/ttys, and start pppd after booting on the port.
>Fix:
use GSM card. Not always wanted, due to less bandwidth and higher
costs if used in the local region.
