Thanks for the reply.  Even after I run ranlib, though, I got errors
when I then went back and re-added something.

  I am puzzled, since this is the *only* system that has ever had
this trouble when building this program.  It was built to compile
on BSD systems by the author, so one would expect that his makefile
had worked on them in the past.

  Anyway, thanks for the reply.  When I get the failure of ar after
ranlib has been used documented, I will send that one in, as well as
the termcap problems I am now seeing (-1 lines is not a particularly
useful screen length!).
