Hrmpf, I must have messed up something in my own test.  Now that I ensure
I'm actually root when I think I am, it's doing the same as Solaris (clear
on non-root user and no change on root).  Seems my SunOS test wasn't
actually run as root and I didn't realize it. 

(No, Virginia, my root shell doesn't have # as a prompt--and I know, it
should.  ;)
