After some testing and fixing a couple of problems in the previous
patch, I've committed a version which seems to work.  Note that I
haven't tested it under serious load, so there may still be problems I
don't know about.

The new revision is:

and should show up on sun-lamp tonight.  Anyone truly impatient who
wants to try it out Right Bloody Now can send me email...
