From my explorations, it appears to be close to impossible to get
X to run on a Dell Pentium, with any flavor of NetBSD, without massive
recompilation:

1) XFree on sun-lamp/iastate/in France requires shared libraries; the
static version is a mirage since only the servers are linked
statically, the bin tar file is just a link to the shared version.

1a) Even if that were not a problem, the pms mouse driver intermittently
hangs the system on booting. I can't tip to the mouse either once
it does boot. (pms configured to IO_KBD and IRQ 12, it that matters.)

2) -> attempt to switch to -current binary -> fails, since it isn't
   configured for Pentium

3) even if configured (due to the help of a kind NetBSD user), the
pms mouse driver hangs the system on boot (see 1a).

My hardware isn't that unusual, so I'm a bit frustrated.

Thanks for any pointers.
