I think it's a bit more pragmatic than that.

I spoke to Wilfredo Sanchez from Apple at last year's Apachecon.  He was (is?)
the person who was riding herd over the BSD support in Rhapsody/MacOS X Server.

I remember him telling me that a bunch of the people that were working on MacOS
X Server kernel support had been sent off to one of Kirk McKusick's classes,
and that Kirk was using FreeBSD to teach in the class.  Ergo the FreeBSD bent.
