I can't stress enough how good this particular feature is when used 
wisely.  While I'll grant that there are a number of problems with the 
1.0 pppd (given the fact that it's been patched several times, and now 
completely replaced), I'm using a -current pppd that runs with

lcp-echo-interval 60 lcp-echo-failure 5

quite nicely.
