I don't understand how what Brian Kendig described is possible.  If a work
is in the public domain, then if someone places a copyright on her own copy,
surely no one else's copy is suddenly restricted.  Otherwise, only one
company could publish Shakespeare.  So what gives?  Did his friend have
a really lousy lawyer?
