Some OSes and boot firmware simply cannot understand sector sizes other than 512 bytes and so some vendors added an option to their CD-ROM firmware to switch to 512-byte emulation. Pretty much exactly the same as some modern HDDs with 4096 byte sectors pretending that they have 512 byte sectors.
