	hello.  I apologize for the noise.  It appears I hadn't set noflash
and, because the terminal type I've been using for decades doesn't have the
flash capability, I didn't realize flash was switched on by default.  
I've now tested with noflash set and it beeps as expected.  I will update
my .exrc file.
