FWIW, when we started supporting r/o src builds, i switched to
using them (decades ago now), and my "weird random build errors"
rate massively decreased.

there are too many easy ways for turds to end up in the source
tree that confuse make and this method avoids most of them.

it *is* frustrating dealing with /usr/src being r/o and i can't
edit sources, but i have an "svi" script that edits the right
place (where the r/o null mount comes from) that mostly makes
it easy to work around.

(keen readers may notice how mknative supports a different
top-level subdir to write to than use.)
