Doubtful that there is a bug only affecting login managers :)

xdm places the input data and the cursor one or two pixels too low,
damaging the border while you type.

Some people also report completely different artefacts like
shaded rectangles that are not related to xdm but they notice
these when xdm is started. That is probably a driver bug.
