I got it to work after a "clean boot" and directly going to the shell. I was able to force installboot, redo all the installation procedure which then succeeded. I have a bootable system now.
Apparently, if sysinst aborts due to the mentioned installboot error, then also the shell doesn't work. Very strange.
Another system succesfully NetBSD-ized :) with the bad road most Linux distributions are taking with systemd... the choice of nice OS to have on our computers dwindles...
