lastlogx not getting updated

Hi!

My /var/log/lastlogx was last updated in September. When I noted that
I suspected the file got corrupted and that stopped further updates,
and replaced it with a 0-byte file with the same permissions. However,
it still doesn't get updated.

-rw-rw-r--  1 root  utmp      0 Dec 17 13:32 /var/log/lastlogx
-rw-rw-r--  1 root  utmp  65536 Sep 18 20:17 /var/log/lastlogx.old

That's on 7.99.3/amd64. Does anyone else see this?
