We recently had a similar problem where not the driver but the
controller's firmware was to blame. We bought an LSI (or 3ware,
which seems to be the same these days) MegaRAID SAS 9260-8i
(because it was in the list of adapters supported by NetBSD's
"mfi" driver), with battery. The battery we got is an "iBBU08".
No matter how long we charged it, it was not recognized.
When searching the web, we found contradicting information;
in most of it that battery type was not listed as supported
for that adapter type.
The solution was that we needed to download the most recent
firmware and flash it onto the RAID card. After that, the
battery was recognized and the cache enabled.
