urndis attachment

I am trying to use the urndis driver (current i386 kernel, 2012-01-12)
with an HTC mobile phone but the umass driver seems to attach instead,
regardless of whether the phone is set to act like a disk drive or
network tethering.  How is the urndis driver supposed to attach?  Must
it be configured?
