very latest src kernel unbootable

My Lenovo T410 (core i7) hangs hard trying to boot kernel with the latest
srcs. It emits "Detecting hardware" and at least one "frame" of the /-\|
spinner, then locks.

I think whatever src change that brought this is from w/i the last 24h.
