failure to update raided dell optiplex 745

Trying to get an optiplex 745 box setup with raid1 raidframe root 
disks and current -current (i386).

Was able to set it up happily with 5.1 but if I try to boot with a 
current GENERIC kernel (from this morning) it dies with:

Stopped in pod 0.1 (system) at netbsd:strcmp+0x60: movb 0(%ebx),%al


Cant get the usb keyboard to respond in the debugger so can't get a 
backtrace or anything else.

suggestions?
