Hmmm, looking at the source code, it appears that I need to also add

        options DRM_NO_AGP

in the kernel config file.  Too bad this isn't mentioned in the drm(4) 
man page.

BTW, it also appears that there is an

        options DRM_NO_MTRR

available.
