Personally, I'd like to see the ability to open directories preserved.  There 
may be good reasons to avoid writing to a directory.  If so, perhaps that 
could be prevented.

Along the same line, I notice that less/more will no longer open a directory:

# less -f .
. is a directory

contrary to what its man page says:

-f or --force
Forces non-regular files to be opened.  (A non-regular file is a directory or 
a device special file.)
